Pediatric Training Program

Saving a generation through prevention, early detection and treatment

After the fall of the Soviet Union, health systems that once supported the medical and patient communities were disrupted. Standards of care and training programs in modern pediatrics deteriorated, impacting a whole generation of children. Detection and early treatment of congenital and acquired disorders among newborns and toddlers was sorely lacking in Armenia.

In 2003, COAF provided a grant to the Armenian Association of Pediatricians (ArAsPed). Numerous districts of the Republic of Armenia benefited from a Pediatric Training Program implemented throughout the country. Under the direction of Konstantine Ter-Voskanian, MD, Head of the Chair of Pediatrics at the National Institute of Health and founder of ArAsPed, more than one hundred general pediatricians and pediatric nurses were trained. As part of this initiative, the normal growth pattern of children has been continuously monitored and analyzed during the years following the training to reveal the early signs of disorders so that appropriate case management could be provided.
